The Tanzanian project at ISA began in 1995. As part of this project a group of staff and students (Sue Worsnup, Lisa Verkerk, Jan Humpleby, Virginia Weegenaar, Ella Sparrenius Waters, Reika Hayakawa, Asami Funai, Georgia Ellis, Maya Harary, Kylah Jones, Nandini Mehra, Celestine Weegenaar and Mariella Verkerk) went to Tanzania in June to run an academic and sporting programme at the Maasae Girls Lutheran Secondary School in Monduli, Tanzania.Following nine months of preparation the group left Amsterdam on June 12th, full of anticipation and ready to meet the challenges that such a trip brings. We began teaching the 77 Form 1 students the following day. Each day followed a fairly strict schedule with lessons from 8.30 – 10.30, 11.00 - 13.00, 13.30 – 15.30 and an evening programme from 19.15 - 20.45. We taught English, Geography, Math, Biology, Physics, Singing, First Aid, Sports and Arts and Crafts. There was also an evening programme involving games, a campfire and art and craft activities. The Form One students also prepared an evening of sketches, where they acted out many aspects of Maasae life. During the trip we went with the MGLSS students to the Taranguire National Park. We also went to visit a Maasai boma or settlement, the home of one of the girls in Form One, where her father lives with his four wives at his brother’s boma. It was extremely interesting to see their lifestyle and living conditions as well as to have a brief glimpse of a patriarchal society. Over the years, this programme has proved to be of enormous benefit to both the Maasae girls and ISA students and a great friendship has developed between the schools.
